Creation Stories-Bao抱(2020)

· Inspiration

“Bao” is the second doll I created to practice and solidify my understanding of Asian children’s facial structures. She features the classic Asian children’s double eyelids with an inner fold. The overall design is inspired by a little Asian girl, incorporating traditional Chinese embroidery on the collar and elements of classic Chinese traditional children’s toys—such as the rattle drum, paper kite, and cloth tiger.

Her name “Bao” means “hug” in Chinese. The character is made up of two parts: the left radical suggests the meaning “hand”, and the right part “包” indicates the pronunciation “bao”. This pronunciation is actually drawn from the “bo” in “boto”, my usual online nickname as a doll artist.

· Process

This is the first doll I created by combining clay modeling with 3D scanning technology. I began by roughly shaping the desired style and proportions in clay, then used 3D scanning to convert the model into a digital format for further detailed carving.
